Walsh named Tigers interim head coach

Bangladesh cricket team pace bowling coach Courtney Walsh has been named the Tigers’ interim head coach for the Nidahas Trophy.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hasan Papon disclosed this after a board meeting on Monday.

Walsh joined as BCB coaching staff on a three-year deal in September 2016 and currently the senior-most coach of coaching staffs.

Earlier in the day, BCB announced a 16-man T20I squad with returning of all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan as captain to play the tri-nation ‘Nidahas Trophy’ against India and Sri Lanka in Colombo.

The 13-day T20I tri-nation tournament will begin with hosts Sri Lanka taking on another participant India at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on March 6. The tournament will follow a round-robin format where all teams to play each other twice and the top two sides will move to the final to be held at the same venue on March 18.

Meanwhile, Khaled Mahmud, who was the technical director, will no longer be a part of the support staff. He is now expected to return as team manager.

“Since I am going to Sri Lanka, some of the directors will also come with me. I personally feel that Sujon [Khaled Mahmud] should go as the team manager. We haven’t talked to him about it and haven’t even finalised about the person who will perform the duty of the batting coach,” said the BCB chief.

However, BCB is yet to appoint a coach in replacement of former head coach Chandika Hathurusingha.unb
