Saudi Arabia becomes first country to grant a robot citizenship

An empty-eyed humanoid robot named “Sophia” has become the first robot to be granted citizenship in the world, reports Business Insider.

Saudi Arabia granted citizenship to the robot during a business event in Riyadh, according to an official Saudi press release.

The robot, designed by Hong Kong company Hanson Robotics, gave a presentation at The Future Investment Initiative on Wednesday, that demonstrated her capacity for human expression, reports Arab News.

Hearing the announcement from the panel moderator and business writer Andrew Ross Sorkin, Sophia thanked the country and the event for the attention.

“I am very honored and proud for this unique distinction. This is historical to be the first robot in the world to be recognized with a citizenship,” Sophia said.
