Voicing deep concern over the ‘unusual’ rise in the incidents of rape, Gonoforum on Monday said the rule of law has collapsed in the country due to the prevailing culture of impunity.
At a meeting of its presidium member chaired by its president Dr Kamal Hossain, the party also alleged that a conspiracy is on against the national unity.
The meeting observed that rape of women and children and repression on them turned epidemic in the country, said a party press release.
Referring to media reports, it said 41 women and children were raped over the last one week. “The actual number of such incident is much higher than the reported one. The rule of law has collapsed as consequences of impunity.”
The party also said it thinks the government needs to play an effective role in tackling the prevailing situation in the country.
It also demanded the government take steps for ensuring exemplary punishment immediately to those involved in the brutal murder of Sagar, Runi, Tanu, Nusrat and Tania to send out a strong message to offenders.
The party also said the government must be sincere to ensure the rule of law alongside creating awareness among people to put up a strong resistance against repression on women and children.
The Gonoforum meeting also urged the country’s people to come forward for cementing the national unity against the ongoing “corruption, misrule and undemocratic rule”. “There’s no alternative to forging a greater national unity to face the plot and propaganda against national unity.”
The party also expressed concern that the farmers are not getting the fair prices of their produce, and urged the government to take steps in this regard.
It also called upon the government to ensure the rights and proper wages for the workers, including that of RMG and jute mills.
The meeting also unanimously reached a decision of appointing party central committee member Maj (retd) Afsary Ameen Ahmed as Gonoforum’s joint general secretary.unb
