Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury (Maya) on Monday directed the local authorities of Rangamati in Chattogram Hill Tracts to relocate the dwellers who have been living on hill slopes amid acute risk of life.
“In short time, the risky places must be spotted and the dwellers should be shifted from such places by forming separate committees in district level with all the local organisations”, he said.
After attending a workshop over ‘Raising awareness and precaution against the hill and landslide’, at cultural center of ethnic community in Rangamati, the minister came up with the remarks, said a press release of the ministry.
The strict direction came amidst fast approaching monsoon season which poses a grave risk of flash flood and landslides as the monsoon rain hits hilly areas.
Maya also emphasized on an integrated hill management policy, precaution of excessive rain, use of modern technology and technics in hill management.
Referring the last year’s tragic deaths in Hill Tracts, the minister urged to move the people immediately, who have been living on hilly slopes amid risk of life.
Before that, Maya also participated in a rally organised by the local administration from the municipality office with colorful banners, festoons and placards.
Rangamati Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mamunur Rashid, secretary of Disaster Management and Relief Ministry Md Shah Kamal, former state minister Dipankar Talukdar, Rangamati 305 Brigade commander Golam Faruk were also present at the programme.
