They also damaged a makeshift stage built in front of the party office to stage their protests.

At one stage, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members Moudud Ahmed and Nazrul Islam Khan left the place and entered the party office.

DMP Motijheel Zone ADC Shibli Noman said, “ Showing black flag occupying city road is not a peaceful programme. They did not take any prior permission for arranging such programme. We can’t allow programmes that disrupt public life,”

BNP on February 22 announced the programme protesting the denial of permission for its planned rally on Thursday demanding the release of party chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail.

“We’d sought police permission to organise a public rally on February 22 either at Suhrawardy Udyan or in front of our Nayapaltan office. We’d also taken all necessary preparations. But the police didn’t give us permission,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office on Wednesday.

On February 8 last, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was sent to jail after a special court sentenced her to five years’ rigorous imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.unb
