MPs condemn attack on DU VC residence

Staff Reporter:

Participating in an unscheduled discussion in the Jatiya Sangsad, several MPs on Monday strongly criticised the attackers on the residence of Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University.

Independent MP Rustum Ali Faraji initiated the discussion after Magrib recess, which was joined by Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, State Minister for Information Tarana Halim, Awami League MP Sabina Akter Tuhin and BNF MP Abul Kalam Azad.

Matia Chowdhury said the attack on the residence of DU VC is a dark chapter for all including students.

“What is the need for wearing mask? Who do wear mask? Those who are hypocrites and cheat wear mask,” she said adding that there are some scope (quota in jobs) for children of freedom fighters all over the world.

She asked the Home Minister to ensure punishment for attackers.

Faraji said students have right to do movement, but they did a mistake by attacking on the residence of DU VC. Such incident is unprecedented in Bangladesh as they carried out vandalism, he added.

“Why is this vandalism? Why is this anarchy? It is unexpected,” he said. The independent lawmaker, however, expressed his support in principle to the students’ demand for reform to the existing quota system.

Faraji also said younger sister of his wife was in the residence on Sunday as the DU VC is his brother in-law.

It is essential to enhance scope for meritorious jobseekers by reducing the posts under quotas.  “We expect a justified solution to this through discussion,” he said.

Tarana Halim said they entered the residence of a teacher in the dark of night and vandalised furniture, personal belongings including vanity bag of his wife and even portrait of the Father of the Nation.

“We in no way can call it a movement and it can’t be way of movement,” she said adding that she saw video footages of the attacks.

Hinting at Ganajagaran Manch spokesperson Imran H Sarkar, Tarana said a man gave a facebook post that one of the demonstrators succumbed to injuries. But the person who have been said to be dead claimed he is alive in another facebook post, the junior minister said.

Sabina Akter Tuhin alleged that a facebook post of Ganajagaran Manch spokesperson Imran H Sarker intensified the movement against quota system.

She said Imran H Sarker spread rumour across the country giving a false status in his facebook page. “He is giving false status against the government in the facebook again and again. Why a case is not being filed against him?” she questioned drawing the Home Minister’s attention.unb
