Khulna ‘outlaw’ gets double life in prison

A tribunal here on Wednesday sentenced an alleged outlawed party leader to double life imprisonment for killing a young man in a gun and bomb attack at Uttar Bagmara in Rupsa upazila in 2004.

The convict is Shahidul alias Shimul, son of late Abdul Khaleque, hailing from Gabura village in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira district.

MA Rob Hawlader, Judge of Speedy Trial Tribunal, handed down the verdict on two counts –one for killing and the other for bomb blast.

The court also fined him Tk 10,000 on each count and, in default, to suffer another two years in jail.

According to the prosecution, a group of extremists shot Nazrul Islam alias Nazu, 38, and later blasted bombs at Ashraf Sheikh Slum in the upazila on January 2, 2004, leaving him dead on the spot.

Sub-inspector of Rupsa Police Station Mizanur Rahman filed a case in this regard.

On September 4, 2005, the investigation officer submitted two charge-sheets accusing 12 people.

The court acquitted eight accused while three others died during the trial proceedings.unb
