A High Court order which granted bail to detained acting editor of the daily Amar Desh Mahmudur Rahman in a case filed for alleged attempt to abduct and murder Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy was upheld by the Supreme Court.
A five-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order after dismissing a petition filed by the government seeking a stay on the High Court order on Monday.
Earlier, on September 7, the High Court granted bail to Mahmudur Rahman in the case clearing the way for his release from prison.
The Amar Desh editor has been in detention since April 2013.
He was shown arrested in several cases. However, he got bail in all of them.
On September 18, the Supreme Court stayed till October 30 the High Court order of bail and sent the government’s stay petition to the Appellate Division’s full bench for its hearing.
