A Dhaka court today sent Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury, secretary general of Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity — a platform working for passengers’ rights, to jail after rejecting separate prayers seeking his remand and bail in a case filed over extortion.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Golam Nabi passed the order after Investigation Officer (IO) in the case Bajlur Rahman, also a sub-inspector(SI) of Mirpur Model Police Station, produced Mozammel before the court with a fresh five-day remand prayer, while defense lawyer Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua sought bail of Mozammel and cancellation of the fresh remand prayer.
It is said in the new remand prayer that important information was found from the accused during the previous one-day remand.
During primary investigation it was revealed that “the accused used to demand and extort money from various transport workers association”, according to the remand prayer.
Therefore, it is necessary to take the accused in fresh remand for further questioning in order to recover the extorted money and reveal names of his associates, it added.
The road safety campaigner was placed on a one-day remand for interrogation hours after he was arrested on Thursday in a case filed over extortion, a charge his wife and fellow campaigners termed “false”.
Police arrested Mozammel from his Sanarpar house in Narayanganj two days after the extortion case was filed with Mirpur Model Police Station.
In the case statement, complainant Md Dulal alleged that Mozammel, claiming to be a transport leader, demanded Tk 2 lakh from him, and he gave Mozammel Tk 10,000 in front of Sony Cinema Hall in Mirpur on September 3.
