The High Court on Monday ordered freezing bank accounts of the owner of Tongi’s Tampaco Foils factory after hearing of a writ plea.
An HC bench, comprising justice M Enyatur Rahim and justice Ashish Ranjan Das, passed the order.
The court issued the order in the wake of the recovery of two bodies from the debris of the factory, which collapsed in a blast on 10 September evening. The death toll in the factory fire reached 38 this morning.
According to the HC order, the owner can withdraw money from the account only for payment of wages and compensation to the victim workers.
The HC also directed the packaging factory owner to submit a report regarding the expenditure of the money after a month.
On 19 September, the writ plea was filed with the HC bench seeking the apex court’s direction over compensation for the victims and freezing the bank account of the owner.
The HC also issued a rule asking why the victim of the incident would not be given due compensation.
