Cultural movement needed to remove communalism, fundamentalism: Speakers

Urging to strengthen country’s cultural base, prominent journalist Kamal Lohani on Friday said that cultural movement against communalism and fundamentalism are not in the place where it should have been.

The cultural activist came up with this remark while addressing Professor Kabir Chowdhury memorial lecture programme organised by Ekattorer Ghatak-Dalal Nirmul Committee marking the educationist’s 96th birth anniversary at Jatiya Press Club.

Kamal Lohani said that cultural movements have always worked against communalism in this country throughout the history, but now the situation has changed.

“The government must increase cultural campaigns to fight against communalism and militancy”, he said, adding that budget in cultural sector needs to be increased.

Urging all the cultural activists to come forward, the prominent journalist said, individuals as well as the government have also to perform their duty to strengthen cultural movements protesting communalism and fundamentalism.

However, educationalist Shyamoli Nasrin Chowdhury, president of Sommilito Sangskritik Jote Golam Kuddus, cultural secretary of Ekattorer Ghatak-Dalal Nirmul Committee Shomi Kaiser, president of Jatiya Press Club Muhammad Shafiqur Rahman were also present in the programme with Kamal Lohani in the chair.

After the incident of Holy Artisan attack, the importance of cultural practice for the transition of the nation has been realized, Golam Kuddus said.

Long term planning and cultural practice along with education is a must to build up humanitarian qualities, he added.

On the other hand, Shafiqur Rahman stressed on the importance of one-way education to improve country’s education quality and remove communalism and fundamentalism.

Prominent cultural personality Ramendu Majumder presented the keynote paper on the occasion.
