Chronicles of Cruelty: The price of play, for a boy in Sunamganj

A local Jubo League leader allegedly tortured and chopped off three of a minor boy’s fingers at Shulemanpur village in Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj district.

The victim was identified as Yahin, 7, a first grader  and son of Shahanurof the village.

The victim said Abdul Wadud, a local Jubo League leader and president of Mohalia Haor protection Dam project implementation committee (PIC) tortured him and cut off three of his fingers on his right hand with a sickle over a trivial matter.

He said Wadud chased him and his friends while they were playing on the banks of the dam on Saturday.

The playmates managed to flee the scene but Yahin was caught by Wadud.

Later, even though the young boy pleaded for mercy, Wadud tortured him brutally. At one stage, he cut his fingers, and also threatened to slaughter him with the sickle.

Locals rescued Yahin and sent him to Tahirpur Upazila Health Complex where doctor referred him to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital, said the victim.

The inhuman torture incident became viral at the area after publishing reports on local’s and national dailies and online news portal on Saturday and Sunday.

After publishing the reports, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the district, Sabirul Islam, Superintendent of Police (SP), Md Barqatullah Khan, high officials of the district administration visited the hospital to see the victim.

State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Javed Patwari, Deputy inspector general (DIG) of Sylhet, Md Kamrul Ahsan, different human right organisations took the information of present condition of the victim through officer-in-charge (OC) of Tahirpur Police Station.

The SP also assured the victim’s family about providing all necessary legal assistances.

Sabirul Islam said police must arrest the tormentor “whatever he is doing, no matter what league or how mighty.” unb
